Ana "Hurricane" Julaton Lost to Lisa "Bad News" Brown

I watched with my kuya Danny last sunday the Filipino women boxer Ana Julaton fight Lisa Brown for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) female super bantamweight crown . During initial round, our own Ana has a good start but the precision blows and accidental head butts results to unanimous victory for brown. Ana fought hard and even smile during the fight and readily accepted her fate. She was totally outbox by Lisa Brown but stay on up to the last round showing great sportmanship. But courage and determination was no match to battle hardened veteran like Lisa Brown. We salute Ana Julaton for her great fight, good sportsmanship and gallantry in ring. Hope she will fight again soon.

Mabuhay ka Ana!!!

Lisa Brown delivered the “Bad News” for Filipino fight fans all the way from Canada.

Living up to her moniker, Brown put on a superb display of punching power to spoil Filipino-American Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton’s world title ambitions Sunday with a unanimous decision victory in their showdown for the WBA women’s super bantamweight title at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.

Bloodied and outboxed, the 29-year-old Julaton fought bravely in the last four rounds despite being cut on both eyes after an accidental headbutt in the fifth and sixth rounds.

Julaton’s gallant stand in the late rounds brought back memories of a bloodied Manny Pacquiao showing tremendous fighting spirit against Erik Morales in a fight the Filipino boxer lost in 2005.

A 10-year pro who has fought some of the world’s best female boxers, Brown —originally from Trinidad and Tobago but is now based in Toronto—dictated the pace in the 10-round fight.

The judges scored it, 100-90, 99-91 and 99-92, all for Brown, who captured her fifth world title while denying Julaton a third world crown.

Though Julaton got off to a promising start, landing a couple of heavy blows in the first two rounds, she could do little to stop the 39-year-old Brown, who worked behind solid jabs.

Trained by Nonito Donaire Sr., Julaton, who traces her roots to Pangasinan, fell to her second loss in nine fights. Her first defeat came in another title fight against Dominga Olivo in 2008.

“I’m disappointed at the outcome but I’m very proud of my daughter,” said Julaton’s father, Cesar Jr., who is in the Philippines for a short vacation.

The elder Julaton watched the fight at the GMA Network Center in Quezon City together with friends and relatives.

“She was matched up against a veteran,” Cesar, a taekwondo blackbelter like his daughter, said.

“But she showed a lot of courage and determination as she kept on fighting despite the cut. It’s a learning experience for her.”
